PERILS FROM ABROAD AND FROM WITHIN
Letter from the Publisher – Richard Jordan
On the cover of this edition of The Christian Sportsman magazine is featured Maj. Gen. Gary Harrell who has served our country’s security interests with great honor, valor and dignity throughout his long career. As a free people each America citizen owes our United States military the ultimate tribute in honor of selfless service in protecting our borders from adversarial powers from abroad. Even though we have remained vigilant in overseas military operations to win battle after battle, America is now facing immediate peril from within which can best be understood as spiritual warfare. It is our hope that this article featuring such a distinguished military leader will not only inform our readers with inside perspectives from knowledgeable and authoritative sources but also inspire you to pray for the heart and soul of our nation and its people. It is through prayer that God moves His people to action!
Christian sportsmen numbering over 67,000,000 hunters, anglers and target shooters, almost one-forth of the population across the nation, are at a crossroads in the history of one of the greatest experiments in the course of human history called the United States of America. Yes, citizens can vote and certainly give our elected officials the best of our creative ideas and solutions to preserve our posterity. But more importantly, we can pray and ask God to move in the hearts of His people for each to become engaged in the process of self-government as God intervenes through His people to sustain our nation with a divine purpose, a shining light set on a hill.
It is with great privilege that we have direct insight into the many years of experience of a two-star general who has lived through several major military operations including the Somalian extraction featured in the box office smash, Blackhawk Down. As a husband, father and Christian leader Gary Harrell understands military engagement with temporal enemies but also spiritual warfare as a follower of Jesus Christ! He relates to the reader his perspective in a very candid and straight forward way. We welcome your thoughts, prayer requests and ideas for pro-active involvement in response to the article.
Do not miss David Cabela’s article called “Abandoned” that veers away from traditional African hunting stories to bring to the reader some real life carnage left in village communities when Christian virtues are ignored and cultural rituals are allowed to persist. Then read about pheasant hunting in South Dakota where a team came together in true fashion under the coaching of Todd Worrell of Firesteel Creek Hunting Lodge, former relief pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals. The team effort of corralling wild pheasants has astonishing parallels to the game of baseball. And lastly, Mark Tutor takes a Marco Polo sheep as the ultimate Dream Hunt.
Thank you for your faithful support of The Christian Sportsman magazine as a reader and promoter of our publication to your friends and family members. The articles are primarily centered around hunting and fishing but the real stories comes alive when reading about men and their adventures together with those who matter most in their lives … lifelong friends, family members and others whom God brings across our paths each day. Let’s remember to pray for our nation but also remember to pray for those closest to us whose lives we intersect daily. Together we can face any perils from abroad or from within that might confront us.
